MTNF Scholarship Scheme for Blind Students (MTNF- SSBS)

The MTNF-SSBS is designed to complement the science and technology scholarship scheme by providing scholarship, on an annual basis, to 100 high performing blind students in accredited universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in Nigeria. Each awardee received the sum of N200,000.00 for one academic session while  follow up mentoring support was provided to ensure beneficiaries maintained their Cumulative Grade Point Average(CGPA) to remain on the scheme.

In the last quarter of 2015, award ceremonies for the 4th phase of the Scholarship Scheme were held for 93 new Blind Students in 3 locations across the country. The 3 locations are Lagos, Imo and  the FCT. 82 returning students had their award renewed. The award ceremonies were attended by Government stakeholders such as  Commissioner for Science & Technology, Sokoto State, Senior Manager, National Lottery Regulation Commission and National President, Joint National Association of Person with Disabilities. Other dignitaries included: MTN Vice Chairman, MTNF Directors, beneficiaries, Parents and guardians and Project partners

The scheme which commenced in 2011/2012 is in its fifth phase and has provided a total of 626 scholarships to Blind Students across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.


MTNF Youth Skills Development Project (MTNF YSDP)

The main objective of the pilot phase of this project is to support four selected government technical/vocational colleges across the country through the provision of basic equipment for up-to-date training and qualification of craftsmen/technicians.

The following 4 government technical colleges are benefiting from the first phase of the project:

  • Government Technical College Ikorodu, Lagos State
  • Government Technical College Owo, Ondo State
  • Government Technical College Malali, Kaduna State
  • Government Technical College Farfaru, Sokoto State

During the pilot phase, the following activities were undertaken:

1. Renovation work was conducted on thebeneficiary laboratories

2. Provision of equipment and furniture supply and

3. Capacity building for the following skill areas: Electrical Installation and Maintenance Works, Instrument Mechanics Works, , Refrigeration & Air-conditioning, Fabrication and Welding, Furniture Design and Construction and Plumbing and Pipe Fitting.

The project was commissioned in all the beneficiary States in 2014 by the respective State Governors in Lagos and Ondo and by the Deputy Governor and Speaker, Sokoto State House of Assembly in Kaduna and Sokoto States.

MTNF Security Support Project (MTNF-SSP)

Security Support Project is aimed at contributing to a secured and favourable environment for lives, property and business operations across the country.  MTNF provides fully kitted security vehicles with state of the communication gadgets to aid the police in their duties.

•The handover ceremony of 10 branded security patrol vehicles to Lagos State Security Trust Fund   held on the 14th of April, 2016. Before the event, a courtesy visit was made to the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode. The MTN team was led by MTNF Chairman. The critical stakeholders who attended the events included:

•Members of the Executive Council of Lagos State Government
•The Chairman, Lagos State Security Trust Fund

Since inception in 2013, 31 State of the federation including FCT have benefitted from the donation of secuity Vehicles. Over 190 security have been donated to beneficiary states since the project commenced.

MTNF Special Projects

MTNF’s Support for Internally Displaced Persons in the North EastMTNF’s Support for Internally Displaced Persons in the North East

This is a special project that provide succour to the poor and needy through the provision of relief materials.

MTNF donated relief materials(mattresses, pillows, bedsheets, cooking pots, noodles & disinfectant) to IDP camps in the North Eastern states – Adamawa, Yobe and Borno States in November, 2015.

Notification letters were sent to National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), State Emergency Management Agencies in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno and Deputy Governors of Yobe and Borno States; NCC EVC; Minister for Communication about the delivery date. Officials of NEMA were on hand to recieve the relief items at the camps

MTNF Disability Support Project (MTNF-DSP)

The MTNF-DSP is aimed at improving accessibility and functionality of persons with disabilities through the provision of mobility aids and appliances. The beneficiary selection process include the completion of vulnerability index forms, assessment, as well as verification visits for final selection of high-priority recipients.

The MTNF DSP Phase 5 distribution ceremonies was successfully implemented in the 12 beneficiary states (Abia, Bauchi, Edo, Enugu, Gombe, Katsina, Kogi, Kwara, Ogun, Ondo, Rivers & Zamfara) in December 2015.  An average of 350 persons received one type of mobility aid & appliance per state. Thus, over 4,200 people with disabilities across the 12 states in the country benefitted from the project. The distribution ceremony in each state saw participation of key government stakeholders such as the State Governors; Wives of State Governors; Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries & Directors of the supervisory ministries, etc, and they made ceremonial presentation of some of the equipment to some of the beneficiaries. The phase 6 of the project will be implemented in 2016.
Since the inception of the project in 2009, over 20,000 persons with Disability have benefitted.

Celebration of International Day for Persons with Disabilities

This annual event is part sponsored by MTN in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to create awareness of the situation of Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria in alignment with the UN International Day for Persons with  Disabilities.

The celebration  of the  2016 International Day for Persons with Disabilities,  part  sponsored by MTNF in collaboration with the Ministry of  Women Affairs and  Social Development, held on the 3rd of December, 2016 in  Abuja. The event is held annually to create  awareness and support for Persons with  Disability  world wide. Activities during the event included: Presentation  of papers  on inclusiveness of persons with Disabilities  socially and economically and Dance Drama. MTNF Community Sponsorship Project

MTNF Community Sponsorship project assist the Nigeria Government in providing infrastructural development to semi-urban and rural communities across Nigeria. Infrastructural projects usually undertaken include: Transformer installation for the provision of electricity, Borehole construction for the supply of water, renovation of schools and Town Halls etc.  Many communities have benefitted from this project which is in its 5th phase. The following communities befitted from the construction and Drilling of 650ft Borehole in Phase 5 in 2015:

MTNF Widows’ Empowerment Scheme

MTNF Widows’ Empowerment Scheme (MTNF-WES), a micro-credit model aimed at contributing to the socio-economic development and social inclusion of widows in Nigeria.

The project will involve the provision of business management skills training and tools of trade to boost the businesses of 300 widows from across the country, made up of 50 widows per State. The beneficiary states are Imo, Lagos, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

MTNF- Hearing Aids Support Project

The project provides hearing aids devices to hearing impaired people in Nigeria to ensure their inclusion into the wider society.The pilot phase of the project aim to provides Hearing Aid to 1,500 hearing impaired people in 6 States in Nigeria.

Audiomentric Assessment

From the 4th – 8th of April, 2016, an audiometric assessment to select eligible beneficiaries for the Hearing Aids Support Project held across 6 states – Anambra, Bauchi, Akwa Ibom, Lagos,  Katsina
A total of 1,500 beneficiaries have been selected after the conduction of the exercise. Prominent stakeholders that attended the event in the 6 states included:
•Wife of the Deputy Governor, Bauchi State
•Commissioners of Health of Anambra and Akwa Ibom States
•Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social  Development, Akwa Ibom

Distribution Ceremonies

•The distribution ceremonies of the Hearing Aids Support Project held in Katsina, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi and Benue States in August, 2016. During the ceremonies, 671 beneficiaries with hearing impairments were fitted with hearing aids  appliances. A mop up exercise for beneficiaries who couldn’t make distribution ceremonies was also conducted in each of the locations. At the end of the mop up exercise, a total of 847 beneficiaries have been fitted with hearing aids devices. A review of the performance of the hearing aids devices provided to beneficiaries who attended the distribution ceremonies was also conducted  at the same event. Prominent stakeholders that attended the event in the 6 states included:

•Representatives of Ministers for Women Affairs and Health
