Notes From The MTNF Chairman

I welcome you to the MTN Foundation website, which showcases our pioneer work in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility. In 2004, we embarked on a journey which many saw as a test of MTN’s commitment to the socio-economic development of Nigeria, with the establishment of the very first non-governmental foundation that is wholly supported by a telecommunications company.

Using the UN Millennium Development Goals as a guide, we dedicated ourselves to a collaborative process, consulting and listening carefully to various stakeholders in various sectors, to enable us ascertain the exact needs of our people.

I am delighted with the progress made by our Foundation since inception, and the significance of the numerous projects and activities which we have been involved in. This journey has taken us through several memorable roads, touching lives and building enduring friendships along the way, while we have made significant impact through our 319 project sites (as at July, 2012) located in all 36 states and the FCT.

Our commitment to adding value in the lives of our fellow brothers and sisters is evident in everything we do. From the secondary school child in Ekiti state who is better equipped to understand Mathematics, English Language and ICT, (along with his classmates in 62 MTNF-supported schools across 15 states); to the mother who is now able to provide for her family through the rural telephone business that MTNF supports in the 36 states.

We are proud that thousands of Nigerian college students including the blind can now study conveniently with our scholarships, thousands of people nationwide have received HIV and Sickle cell counseling and support; while thousands of disabled persons across the nation can now live more comfortable lives by benefitting from the MTNF Disability Support Project.

We are also pleased to note that our efforts have spurred widespread recognition of the benefits of Corporate Social Responsibility in Nigeria, as more companies are now eager to invest in giving back to their society in a manner that conforms to internationally acceptable standards.

Indeed, we are excited about the immense possibilities and potentials for our nation’s development. However we are also keenly aware of the bigger challenge to ensure that CSR policies and practices in corporate Nigeria are not motivated by the need for publicity, but are driven by genuine commitment to improve the quality of life of the communities where we operate.

This is part of our vision and mission, and with a team of dedicated board of directors and staff, and the ever-present support of our benefactor and parent company, MTN Nigeria, we look forward to partnering with you and sharing your ideas.

Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi (OFR)
